Car hire on the East Coast of Mauritius
The east coast is the quiet, breezy side. Belle Mare runs for kilometres of white sand and shallow lagoon, Trou d'Eau Douce is the departure point for the boats to Ile aux Cerfs, and Poste Lafayette and Roches Noires further north are windier, emptier and mostly villas rather than resorts. Inland, Centre de Flacq has the market and the supermarkets everyone drives to, while Bel Air Riviere Seche sits on the road back towards the centre. There is no motorway on this coast: you drive through cane fields and villages, which is slow but pleasant. Beaches are further apart than in the north, so a car here is not optional.
