The centre is where Mauritius actually lives and works. Port Louis is the capital and the port — the Caudan waterfront, the Central Market, the racecourse at Champ de Mars — and its traffic is serious on weekday mornings, when a small car is worth a lot. Above the city the plateau towns run one into the next: Beau Bassin, Rose Hill, Quatre Bornes and its market, Vacoas, Phoenix, Floreal, then Curepipe, cooler and wetter than the coast, with the Trou aux Cerfs crater on top. Ebene, Bagatelle and Moka are the offices, the malls and the newer business districts. From here every coast is roughly an hour away. From Rs 1,560/day.
