Cheap car hire in Mauritius exists, and it is not the $13-a-day headline. The headline exists to be clicked; what you actually pay is built from five or six lines it leaves out. This guide is about a genuinely low total from a local business, and the difference between a car that is cheap and a listing that only looks it.
What the comparison-site headline price leaves out
The big comparison sites show the lowest possible daily rate for the lowest possible car, stripped down to the bare rental; everything that makes it usable is added back later, screen by screen. What is usually missing from the headline:
- The airport fee. Being met at arrivals is priced separately by almost everyone, and the headline assumes you are not.
- The cover. The rate is quoted with the highest excess; the reduced-excess product appears at the payment step, per day, often costing more than the rental.
- The season. The number in the advert is the cheapest week of the year. Your dates are probably not that week.
- The extras. A child seat, a second driver, a GPS: each one a line, per day.
- The deposit. Not a cost, but a hold on your card that the headline never mentions and the counter always does.
Their booking and cancellation terms also differ from ours and are worth reading before you compare. It is how headline pricing works everywhere, and the way round it is to compare finished totals for your actual dates.
The five lines that move the bill (season, delivery, extras, cover, fuel policy)
On a Dodo Rent car page the total shown before you pay already contains everything the business charges. It is built from:
- Season. Each business sets its own seasonal rates by date range, applied per day. December and January are the peak.
- Delivery. Collecting the car from the business's own base is always free. Delivery to your address is a flat amount within a radius the business sets; where that amount is zero, the listing carries a free delivery badge. Airport handover is a separate flat amount.
- Extras. Priced per day or as a flat amount. Take the ones you need; the total updates as you tick them.
- Cover. The cap on what you would pay towards damage is set per car and shown on the listing. Top-up cover, where offered, reduces it and costs extra.
- Fuel policy and mileage. The specs box states whether mileage is unlimited or capped per day, and the fuel arrangement.
Fuel itself, tolls, parking and any fines are yours and are never inside a rental price, here or anywhere.
Cheapest months and how far ahead to book
The cheapest car hire in Mauritius is the same car in a different month. The peak is December and January, when the northern winter, the local summer and the school holidays all arrive at once; the shoulder weeks either side cost less, and the quiet months between them are the cheapest of all.
For the quiet months there is no need to book far ahead. For December, January and the school holidays, book early: the well-priced cars go first, and what is left late is the expensive end of the fleet.
Booking early also fixes the price. The total is set when the booking is placed, and if plans change you can cancel from your trip page before pick-up: the prepayment stays with the booking, and nothing further falls due because the balance was never taken.
Compact vs sedan: where the saving really is
Across the fleet listed here, a compact car starts typically from about Rs 1,400 a day and a sedan typically from about Rs 1,800 a day, so the step between the two categories is a few hundred rupees a day, not thousands. Over a week that is a meal out, not a flight.
The real saving is inside the category. Newer cars cost more than older ones for the same badge, and that gap is often larger than the compact-to-sedan step; a three-year-old compact drives just as well on roads where nothing happens above 110 km/h.
Pick the category by need, then look for value within it. A compact suits one or two people in the north or west; a sedan earns its extra with luggage or in the east, where drives are longer. Paying for an SUV to drive between a hotel and a beach is the most common way to overspend.
Booking direct with a Mauritian business vs an offshore broker
A car booked through an offshore broker is still supplied by somebody on the island; the broker takes the booking, adds its layer, and passes the car to a local supplier you meet at the kerb.
Booking directly with a Mauritian rental business, which is what a listing on Dodo Rent is, removes that layer: the price is the business's own price for that car, the person handing over the keys is the person who set it, and the trip chat reaches them rather than a call centre. The trade-off: a small local fleet has fewer cars, so the exact model you had in mind may not be free on your dates. What you get instead is a lower total for the same class of car and a business that answers its own messages.
The cheapest way to get from the airport with a car
The cheapest route from SSR with a rental car is usually to have the car meet you there: airport handover is a flat amount on the car page, from about Rs 500 on the cheapest listings. The alternative, a taxi to the coast and a second taxi back to collect a car the next day, costs more and loses a morning.

Cheaper still, if you are staying in the north, is delivery to your hotel on day two from a business nearby; the compact cars in the north are where the lowest totals tend to sit.
A realistic budget for a week
The shape of a genuinely cheap week for two people, using the floor figures above:
- The car. A compact at around Rs 1,400 a day is roughly Rs 9,800 for seven days before any weekly discount, which the total on the car page will show.
- Getting it. Free if you collect from the business's base, from about Rs 500 for airport handover, or a flat delivery amount to your hotel, which on many listings is zero.
- Cover. Nothing extra if you accept the cap shown on the car page; a per-day top-up if you would rather reduce it.
- Extras. Only what you tick. A second driver is the one most couples actually need.
- Fuel. Not in the rental. A compact around the north with one long day out uses little.

Red flags on a suspiciously low listing
A low price is not a red flag; a low price with something missing is. Before you book the cheapest car on any site, check:
- No cover figure. If the listing does not say what you would pay towards damage, you will find out at the counter.
- No security line. Nothing held, card hold or cash deposit should be stated before you book, with the amount where one applies.
- Photographs of a car that is not the car. Stock images of the model rather than the vehicle.
- A request to pay off the platform. The prepayment is paid online and the balance at handover to the business named on the booking. A request to send money elsewhere is a reason to stop.
- A price far below the category floor. Listings here pass a price check against their category before they go live; elsewhere, a rate a long way under everything comparable is usually missing a line.
- Minimum age and licence period missing. They are conditions of the rental; if they are not stated, expect to meet them at the kerb.
