Location de voiture sans caution à Maurice : comment ça marche

La plupart des voitures listées ici ne retiennent rien à la prise en charge, et ce qui remplace la caution est indiqué sur la page de la voiture avant la réservation.

If you have rented a car abroad before, you probably arrived at the counter braced for the moment a large sum gets blocked on your card. In Mauritius that moment mostly does not come. Most cars listed here hold nothing at pick-up, and the arrangement that replaces the deposit is printed on the car page before you book.

Why a deposit is the norm at the big desks

At an international rental desk, the deposit does one job: it gives the company something to draw on if the car comes back damaged, unfuelled, or with a fine attached. A desk serving thousands of anonymous renters wants that security in hand before the keys move, and a credit-card hold is the quickest way to get it.

The hold is usually tied to the insurance excess, and it stays blocked for the rental plus a few days. On a two-week holiday that is real money frozen on a card you are also using for hotels and dinners. It is also why "car hire without a credit card" is such a common search: a debit card often cannot carry a hold of that size, and the desk will not release the car without one.

It is a model built for volume, and it is not the one most Mauritian rental businesses use.

How most Mauritian businesses do it instead

The rental businesses listed on Dodo Rent are local companies with fleets of a handful to a few dozen cars. They meet you in person, they photograph the car with you at the handover, and they run on a liability model rather than a deposit model.

Under that model, nothing is taken or blocked at pick-up. The company's comprehensive insurance covers the car. If the car is damaged while it is in your care, you contribute towards the repair up to a capped amount, and only if damage actually happens. If the car comes back clean, no money ever moved.

That is why a car page here can carry a NO DEPOSIT badge and mean it. It is not a promotion; it is how that business operates. The one thing to hold onto: this is most cars, not all. A minority of businesses do take a hold, and they say so on the listing.

What you actually cover if the car is damaged (the cap on the car page)

What stands in place of the deposit is a cap, and it is on the car page.

Every listing carries a short cover block. The line that matters reads, in plain words, what you cover if the car is damaged: the most you would contribute if something happens, in rupees, set per car by the business that owns it. Rental companies call it the excess; the cover guide explains it in full. The points to keep:

  • It is a ceiling, not a charge. A scratched bumper costs a bumper repair, not the whole cap.
  • It is per car. Two cars from the same company can carry different figures. Read the number on the car you are booking, not a similar one.
  • It is fixed at booking. The amount on your rental agreement is the amount shown when you booked.
  • It can be reduced. Many businesses offer top-up cover as an extra, priced per day or as a flat amount.

There is no platform-wide figure and no island-wide figure. Any cap quoted without a specific car attached to it is a guess.

Card hold vs cash vs no security: reading the listing

Under the cover block, each car page states its security arrangement in one line, and there are only three versions:

  • Nothing held at the counter. The liability model above, with the cap shown next to it.
  • Deposit held on your card at pick-up. A hold placed at the handover and released after a clean return. The amount is on the listing.
  • Cash deposit at pick-up. Handed over at the handover and handed back after a clean return, against a receipt. Some businesses let you choose between card and cash.

Filter for the no-deposit badge in the catalogue, then confirm the line on the car page; the two always agree, because they come from the same setting the business chose for that car.

Photo check-in: your protection without a deposit

A deposit protects the company. What protects you, in the absence of one, is evidence, and the platform builds it into every handover.

At pick-up the business does a photo check-in with you: the car from several angles, the fuel gauge, the odometer. At the return the same happens in reverse. Both sets are timestamped and attached to your booking, so the condition of the car at each end is a record rather than a memory.

Walk round the car with the person handing it over. If you see a mark that is not in their photographs, say so then and have it added. Take your own photographs as well; it costs a minute and settles most disagreements before they start.

The check-in is the document that decides whether a mark was yours, so it matters more here than at a big desk, not less.

When a business does take a hold — and why that is fine

Some companies prefer a hold at pick-up, typically on newer or higher-value cars. On Dodo Rent that is a legitimate choice, disclosed before you book rather than discovered at the kerb.

Where it applies, the car page states the amount and the method. The hold is placed at the handover and released within a day of a clean return; a cash deposit comes back on the spot. Dodo Rent never handles the deposit in either direction; it stays between you and the rental business.

If you would rather avoid a hold, that is what the badge and the filter are for. If the car you want takes one, at least you know the number, the method and the timing before you commit, which is more than most airport counters offer.

Booking without a credit card: what you need

The reason a credit card is demanded at the big desks is the hold. Remove the hold and the reason goes with it. What the booking here actually requires:

  • A payment card for the prepayment, in the name of the person booking. You pay a prepayment online when you book; the balance goes directly to the rental business at pick-up, by the methods listed on the car page. Since most cars place no hold, the card only needs to carry the prepayment, not a frozen sum on top.
  • Your driving licence and identity document, uploaded once to your account and reused for every rental. The originals are checked at the handover.
  • A driver who matches the booking. The person named on the booking drives, meets the car's minimum age and licence period, and presents the documents that were uploaded. The document guide sets out the detail.

If you are being met at arrivals, the airport page lists the cars offering handover at SSR, and its FAQ answers the deposit question directly for that route.

Quick checklist before you press Book

  1. Read the security line on the car page: nothing held, card hold or cash deposit.
  2. Note the cap next to it, and decide whether the top-up cover extra is worth it for your trip.
  3. Check the minimum age and licence period against the person who will drive.
  4. Upload your documents at home, in daylight, all four corners in the frame.
  5. Know the two payments: the prepayment online today, the balance to the business at pick-up.
  6. Plan three minutes for the photo check-in, and take your own pictures.

A compact car is the island's default and the cheapest to run; a sedan suits two people with luggage. If you are staying in the north, the Grand Baie page lists the cars based locally, most of them without a deposit.
