There is no single minimum age to rent a car in Mauritius. There is the age at which the law lets you drive, and there is the age each rental business is prepared to hand its own car to — and the second number is the one that decides your booking. This guide explains where the thresholds come from, what a younger or older driver can expect, and how to see only the cars that will accept you.
The legal minimum vs each business's own minimum
Mauritian law lets you hold a full car licence from eighteen. That is the floor; nothing on the island goes below it.
Rental businesses set their own minimum above it, per car, stated on every car page alongside the minimum period the licence must have been held. Across the fleet on Dodo Rent the most common minimum is twenty-one; some listings ask for twenty-three or twenty-five, and the bigger or more expensive the car, the more likely it is to be one of those.
The requirement is measured on the date of pick-up. A birthday during the holiday does not count, and a business is entitled to decline the handover — and treat the booking as cancelled by you — if the driver at the door does not meet the two lines on the listing. Read them before you book, not at the kerb.
Licence years: why "one year" and "two years" both exist
The second line on the car page is how long you must have held a full licence. Most listings say one year or two; a few accept any full licence.
Two numbers exist because they are two judgements about the same risk. A business insuring a small, cheap car is usually content with a year. A business whose fleet is larger or newer tends to want two, because the first year on the road is where most minor damage happens, whatever the driver's age. Neither is the island's rule; both are the business's own.
The period counts from the date the full licence was issued, not from a provisional stage, and it is measured at pick-up — a licence that reaches the threshold mid-holiday does not qualify. Under 25: which categories usually accept you
If you are between twenty-one and twenty-four, you have real choice on this island — more than in most of Europe. The compact cars are where it is widest: most small hatchbacks list a minimum of twenty-one with a one- or two-year licence, and many sedans do the same. The categories that thin out are the ones you would expect: luxury cars, the larger SUVs and part of the electric fleet are the listings most likely to ask for twenty-three or twenty-five.
Under twenty-one, the choice is narrow and per business. Whether any listing goes down to the legal minimum for your dates is something the age filter below answers in a second.
What you will not find is a young-driver surcharge appearing at the handover. Any extra a business charges is on the car page and in your total before you pay. If a car accepts your age, it accepts it at the listed price.
Over 70: what to expect and what to bring
Listings on Dodo Rent state a minimum age, not a maximum. There is no upper-age line on a car page, and no business here is asked to set one.
That does not mean every business is indifferent. Where a business has its own view on older drivers, it belongs in the terms on its car page, and if the page says nothing, the sensible move is a one-line message through the listing before you book: your age, your licence, your country. They know their own insurance and would far rather answer now than at the door.
What to bring is the same as for any driver, with one extra check. Some countries — the United Kingdom among them — require licence renewal at seventy and at short intervals afterwards, and an expired card is not a licence however long you have been driving. Look at the date on the card.
Filtering the catalogue by your age (the search asks once)
You do not have to read every car page to find the ones that accept you. The catalogue filters ask two things about you — your age and how long you have held your licence — as a band rather than a number: 18–20, 21–22, 23–24 or 25+, and under a year, one to two years, or three and more.
Answer once and every car whose minimum you do not meet disappears from the results. The filter is deliberately cautious: it takes the younger edge of your band, so a driver who answers "21–22" sees only cars a twenty-one-year-old can rent. A line under the results says how many cars were hidden because they need an older driver or a longer licence, so you know what you are not seeing and why. What remains on screen is bookable for the driver you described.
Second driver rules
Sharing the driving is normal on a fortnight's trip, and it is handled formally: only drivers written into the rental agreement may drive.
A second driver is a bookable extra on many listings, priced per day or as a flat amount, and it appears in your total before you pay. Whether the extra exists is per listing — if a car page does not offer it, choose one that does rather than assume it can be arranged at the handover.
The second driver meets exactly the same conditions as the first: the same minimum age, the same licence period, the same originals at the door. A partner younger than the listing's minimum cannot be added, however experienced the main driver is. If the two of you fall into different bands, filter the catalogue for the younger one.
Before you book
Everything above comes down to two lines on the car page and one filter in the catalogue.
- Check the minimum age and the licence period on the listing against the date of pick-up, for every driver who will be at the wheel.
- Filter once by your own facts so that what you compare is what you can rent.
- Message the business if you are close to an edge — under twenty-one, over seventy, a licence that only just qualifies. The answer is quicker than a declined handover.
- Bring the originals — licence, identity document and the payment card — and make sure the person named on the booking is the one who drives.
